Although trained in her family's retail business, Dana chose a different direction and career entirely. Her first professional position was that of teaching Latin and English at the junior high level. However, after two years of teaching, and exactly one year shy of tenure, Massachusetts experienced deep state budget cuts and many state employees - Dana included - lost jobs.
Dana moved to New York, earned a design degree, and pursued successfully many creative endeavors, to include but not limited to a costume jewelry line, photography, styling, prop making, set design, art direction, and more. In academia, she began as adjunct, created a two year associate art and design program, Visual Merchandising, at a private fashion-business college. In addition to teaching a variety of courses, other administrative roles included Academic Advisor, Senior Thesis Mentor, and assessment and accreditation, and regulatory reporting, to name a few.
Dana began studying clay in the early 1990's and became involved in all aspects from class monitor, studio assistant, technician, to teaching ceramics at various NYC and Brooklyn studios to all age groups and skill levels.
Life was teaching college, clay and graduate school. Upon conferral of a graduate degree, she was promoted to Chair and remained employed at that college for a total of twelve years. Subsequent roles in higher education included senior executive level positions, such as Dean of Academic and Student Services and related divisions at several colleges and international medical colleges. She also continued clay gigs for production potters.
As of Fall, 2020, Dana joined Williamsburg Ceramic Center, a collective and sister site of Choplet Ceramics.
